Note Princess Gwenllian was the Boadicea of Wales. She was the 12th century heroine married to the powerful Prince of Deheubarth, Gryffydd ap Rhys. She took up arms against the Normans in an effort to drive them from Wales. Operating out of the forest of Caio, Gwenllian recaptured lands taken by the Normans. Her ill fated attack on Kidwelly Castle was not entirely a disaster as her death brought about a closer bond between the Welsh princes and led to a resurgence to push the Normans out of Wales.

A simple stone monument in a field just a mile from Kidwelly Castle records that her marauding Welsh army was defeated by the Norman soldiers of Maurice de Londres. It was in Maes Gwenllian--- Gwenllian's field---that the beautiful princess was executed. Yet her bravery served to inspired a nation and her memory lives on to this day. - Leo van de Pas.1
