St. Bathilde (?)1| Biography* | She probably was born in England and taken to Gaul as a slave. About 641, she was bought by the wife of Erchinoald, mayor of the palace at Neustria. Following the death of his wife, Erchinoald wanted to marry Bathilde. She ran away and did not return until after Erchinoald had married someone else. Clovis II was impressed with her and freed her and married her. She had great influence during his reign, controlling the court and allocation of charity money. After Clovis' death, she became Queen regent for her son Lothair III. She abolished trade in Christian slaves, and repressed simony among the clergy. She attempted to unify the Frankish territory by absorbing Burgundy and put her son Childeric on the throne there. When Lothair came of age, she retired to the covent of Chelles, which she founded in 664. She died at Chelles and was later canonized.2,3 |
