Biography* Samuel Lothrop was born in England, came with his father, Rev. John, to Scituate in 1634, then to Barnstable. He married Elizabeth Scudder 28 Nov 1644. She had been dismissed from the Boston Church 10 Nov 1644 to move to Barnstable. Samuel had met Elizabeth while he was working in Boston as a house builder. Rev. John recorded in his Barnstable Church Register: "My sonn Samuel & Elizabeth Scudder marryed at my house by Mr. Freeman, Nov. 28, 1644." The couple settled in a house next door to Rev. John's. In 1643, he was one of the five Lothrops at Barnstable liable to bear arms. He moved to Pequot (New London), Connecticut in 1648. By May, 1649, he had been appointed judge at Pequot, along with John Winthrop, Jr. and Thomas Minor. He receive a large land grant on the west side of Pequot River north of the settlement, at a place called Namussuck. He fought against the Narragansetts in 1657. In 1679, he was contracted to build the 2nd Church of New London. In 1668, he moved to Norwich, buying the house of John Elderkin. In 1670, he built another house, which he occupied. He was recorded as Constable in 1673 and 1682, and Townsman in 1685. By 1690, Elizabeth had died, and Samuel married Abigail, spinster daughter of Deacon John Doane of Plymouth, born 1632. Samuel died 29 Feb 1700, and on Abigail's 100th birthday "a large audience assembled at her house, and a sermon was preached by the pastor of the church. At this time, she retainde in a great degree the intelligence and vivacity of her earlier years. At the time of her decease, the descedants of her husband amounted to 365." His will was proved in 1701.8
