These are bills filed by executors of estate of Benjamin Hasty, Sr. filed 06 Dec. 1842, giving his will, land settlements, etc. including names of all of his children and married names of daughters, and indicating that son, Benjamin Hasty, Jr. was deceased since his father died. That he died in "Southern Alabama" leaving 4 children under the age of 21-- Benjamin W., James, John, and Polly, and naming Johnathan Lasiter guardian of Benjamin Hasty Jrs. children. (Note: Polly was a nickname for Mary and was used interchangebly in many families I researched); In searching to find this Jonathan Lasiter in Alabama and Tennessee, I (Marie Dean Speakman) found that he was a close neighbor of the Devenport family in Tenn. (In the 1840 Census of Franklin Co., Tennessee, Johnathan Lasiter (age 30-40 with 8 children) lived very close to John W. Devenport (father of James McDonald Devenport), Jeptha Devenport, and Randolph Gibson (son-in-law of John W. Devenport). Since this Benjamin Hasty's daughter, Mary, married James McDonald Devenport (in 1844) it is assumed that the children did not stay in Alabama after their father's death, but went to Tennessee with their guardian, Jonathan Lasiter, and there Mary (b.1830) met James McDonald Devenport. (strictly supposition on part of Marie Dean Speakman). |

*IMPORTANT NOTE (by Marie Dean Speakman): We have searched very thoroughly in census records from 1790 forward in both NC and TN but have been unable to find Benjamin Hasty and Mary Warren Hasty until 1820 census Franklin Co Tenn.
U S FEDERAL CENSUS 1790-1920 SAYS: "COUNTIES IN NC WHERE CENSUS WAS LOST FOR 1790 WERE: ORANGE, CASWELL, GRANVILLE." TENNESSEE CENSUS BOOK SAYS SEVERAL COUNTIES IN TENN. WERE NOT IN 1790 CENSUS -- ONE OF THESE WAS FRANKLIN CO.

NOTE 6/20/03: ROBERT & MARY WARREN CAME TO ROWAN CO, NC FROM VIRGINIA IN ABOUT 1770. IN 1777 ROBERT FILED ON 150 ACRES OF LANDIN BURKE CO. (FORMED FROM ROWAN CO. IN 1777). IREDELL CO. IMPORTANT NOTE: BENJAMIN HASTY AND HIS BROTHER, JORDAN HASTY, (AND A JAMES HASTY), GOT LAND GRANTS AND BOUGHT AND SOLD LAND IN IREDELL CO.,NC FROM 1803 TO 1809. SOME OF THIS WAS FROM AND TO THE WARREN FAMILIES. THIS IS IMPORTANT SINCE BENJAMIN'S WIFE IS MARY WARREN AND WE KNOW SHE WAS BORN IN NORTH CAROLINA, BUT DO NOT KNOW WHERE. WE DO NOT FIND BENJAMIN OR JORDAN HASTY IN ANY CENSUS RECORDS IN NORTH CAROLINA OR TENNESSEE UNTIL 1820 IN FRANKLIN CO., TENNESSEE. (A CENSUS BOOK I FOUND AT THE FHL SAID CENSUS RECORDS IN FRANKLIN CO., TENN WERE LOST (OR NOT AVAILABLE) FOR 1800 & 1810. BENJAMIN & MARY HASTY'S FIRST FOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN IN NC (1800 TO 1808 AND THE OTHERS IN TENNESSEE. THIS WOULD BE CONSISTENT WITH WHEN THEY WERE BUYING AND SELLING LAND IN IREDELL CO., NC. BENJAMIN SOLD LAND IN IREDELL CO., NC IN 1808 AND 1809. JORDAN SOLD LAND THERE IN 1808. |

Marie Speakman 2/93:
Age of Mary Hasty was given as follows: 1820 Census Franklin County Tenn., "Over 45"; 1830 census Franklin Co., Tenn. "50-60"; 1840 (not found); 1850 census Franklin Co. Tenn. - "65"; 1860 census Franklin Co. Tenn. - "85" (I don't know why there was an age inconsistency between 1850 and 1860 census's, however, census's were only as accurate as what information was given to the census taker by whoever answered the door or answered the census questions). Copies of her settlement and inventory in my possession. Inventory of personal estate of Mary Hasty, deceased, was dated 18 June 1864.
Note (Marie Dean Speakman) 5/00: The surname of Mary Warren Hasty was never known (nor have we ever been able to find her parentage despite much research). The name "Warren" was from a letter dated January 12, 1933 (copy in my possession) written by a grandson of "Ben Hasty and Mary Warren". This grandson was Augustus Parmer Hasty, born 1848 in Alabama. In this letter he gave a partial pedigree of himself and his 11 children back to old Benjamin and Mary Warren Hasty. However, he only listed 2 of Benjamin and Mary's children (including his [Augustus Parmer Hasty's] parents William Martin Hasty and Lovina Foster Whittenberg). He explained in this old letter that "the reason I can't give any more information is my mother died when I was a small boy and I went to live with my grandfather. Our records were destroyed." (Note by Marie S.: This must have been his maternal grandfather because Augustus Parmer Hasty wasn't born until 1848, and his grandfather Benjamin Hasty died in 1840.)
Note (Marie Dean Speakman 6/03: We find Benjamin and Jordan Hasty buying and selling (and receiving grants for) land in Iredell Co. NC from 1803-1809. There was a large group of Warren's there at this time and some of the land Benjamin and Jordan bought and sold was from or to the Warren families and their in-law families. I FEEL THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE MARY WARREN HASTY IS A RELATIVE OF THESE WARREN'S). Much of the information I have on the Iredell Warren's came from contacts of Luanne Spence Taylor, and from searching at the FHL recors of Rowan Co., NC; Burke Co., NC formed 1777 from Rowan; Iredell Co., NC formed in 1788 from Rowan Co; and Alexander Co., NC formed from Iredell Co. in 1847. |
