Migraine is a very common disease. Estimates are that about 10% of the population suffers from Migraine attacks.

Women are affected about 3 times more commonly than men. This may be because estrogen tends to provoke migraine attacks. After menopause, unless estrogen replacement is given, women often have a decrease in the frequency of their migraine attacks or may even cease to have them altogether.

In children, migraines are found about equally in boys and girls. They probably occur even in infants, but generally they are not diagnosed until the child is older and talking. Migraine can also start in adulthood, but generally starts by the 20s or 30s. Rarely does migraine start after age 50, and those who are migraineurs generally notice their headaches become less frequent with aging. The most frequent migraines occur in young adults.

Migraine occurs in all races and in all socioeconomic groups.
